Structural Integration

Structural Integration is a type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body. Fascia permeates every aspect of the body from muscles and bones to nerves, veins and even organs like the liver and heart. Fascia also gives muscles and our bodies their shape and support.

Fascia is elastic by nature and is designed to move and slide freely with the muscles, bones and movements of the body.  Injuries, stress, repetitive movements, poor posture and aging can all cause fascia to become stiff, dense and lose its elasticity. Improperly tensioned fascia pulls our bodies out of proper alignment, the most significant force the body has to deal with is the powerful force of gravity. When the body is misaligned it has to use  valuable resources to stay upright instead of using the bodies naturally stacked posture allowing the bones to do most of the work. This coupled with, the stresses of daily life, injuries, unhealthy work stations and mental attitude can cause the body to shorten and tighten the fascia to accommodate. This in turn causes stiffness, pain, and fatigue.

Structural Integration is the process of  lengthening, softening and freeing the fascia  to allow the body to move with ease and restore postural balance. The process is a ten session series that systematically loosens and restructures the tension system of the body. Each session builds upon the last, addressing different layers of tissue throughout the process. The series is designed to balance your body in segments, with each session addressing a different aspect of your structure and movement.  As the body comes back into alignment with gravity it has far more resources to dedicate to healing and overall energy.

Jesse Swim, LMT, practices Structural Integration at Alchemy Wellness. He offers a free 30 minute consultation for clients to find out more about Structural Integration. In addition to offering the traditional 10 series, he also offers a 3 series package for those that are not quite prepared for the 10 series. He also offers single maintenance sessions for clients that have completed the full 10 series.
